Food Bank of East Alabama

The Food Bank of East Alabama is a non-profit distribution center dedicated to feeding hungry people. 

The Food Bank distributes donated and purchased food to more than 11,500 people each month through agencies such as community centers, shelters, senior programs, soup kitchens and emergency food pantries.

The Food Bank's member agencies are located throughout East Central Alabama and are closely monitored by the Food Bank to ensure that they are meeting health and food distribution standards.  The Food Bank provides technical support, training, client screening and social welfare referrals to the agencies.  More than 180 agencies receive food from the Food Bank and 64 percent of the agencies get 80 percent of their food from the Food Bank.

The Food Bank provides a safe, convenient and reliable way to channel food to hungry people through product donations from food retailers, manufacturers the community.  Some of these donations would have otherwise been discarded because of production overruns, labeling errors, changes in marketing, etc.  Food Bank employees and volunteers sort, repack and label all donations prior to distribution to the agencies.

The Food Bank of East Alabama is a member of America's Second Harvest, a national food bank network that solicits food nationwide and allocates it among 200 member food banks.  The Food Bank also receives food donations from the United States Department of Agriculture.

The Food Bank:

  • Is a member of America's Second Harvest
  • Provides food to more than 11,500 Alabama citizens each month
  • Serves the needy through more than 180 member agencies
  • Distributes an average of 300,000 pounds of food each month
  • Provides more than 14 pounds of food to the needy for each dollar donated, which is enough for four meals for a family of four
